More Town Sub-Offices of Bristol

Here are a few more Town Sub-Offices of Bristol, starting with North Street with a single-ring handstamp from November 1859.

North Street went on to have a barred numeral cancel; below is an example from 1869 from J.T. Ball & Sons, Maltsters.

 

Redcliff(e) also had a barred numeral cancel - the example below has an incorrect year in the dater, it should be "65" rather than "56" as the cancel was not issued until 1864.

Here are a couple of later examples of the North Street barred numeral cancel, from April & May 1872.

The single circle handstamp from Queen's Road would have been applied by the counter clerk when the registered envelope was posted in July 1894.

Registered items are a good source of  town sub-office postmarks as they had to be handstamped by the counter clerk, as shown by this example from Gloucester Road in October 1911.

Three Town Sub-Offices of Bristol: Newfoundland Street, Queen Square, Woodwell Crescent

Here are three examples of Town Sub-Office (TSO) marks from Bristol, starting with Newfoundland Street from 1909.  TSO marks are often quite difficult to find.

The Queen Square post office opened in 1891 and closed in 1960.

The Woodwell Crescent Post Office opened in 1880 as a Money Order and Savings Bank branch, and closed in 1973.  It was situated around where St George's Road meets Jacob's Wells Road.

Some Town Sub-Offices of Bridgwater - Bath Road, Dunkery Road, Willoughby Road

Here are a few postmarks from some of the town sub-offices in Bridgwater - there are a lot of TSOs that I haven't seen.  Below you will find postmarks from Bath Road Bridgwater (1982), Dunkery Road Bridgwater (1996) and Willoughby Road Bridgwater (1985).

 

 

Postmarks from Bath Town Subs Offices (TSOs) - Widcombe Parade and Yomede Park

It is quite difficult to find examples of postmarks of Town Sub-Offices as they only handstamped a few types of items (eg. registered mail, PO Savings Books).  Here are a couple of examples of Bath TSOs, firstly from Widcombe Parade - a registered envelope from 1953.

This second item is from Yomede Park, part of a registered item from 1937.

A mix of Minehead

A bit of a mixture from Minehead, for post number 600, beginning with an example of the first Minehead handstamp used, from 1709.

Jumping in time to 1946, this under-franked postcard was charged postage due.  The card was posted in Dunster but was given the "2D / TO PAY / 779" handstamp of Minehead because Dunster had come under Minehead from 1932.

Here is a clear "MINEHEAD / WHERE GLORIOUS / EXMOOR / MEETS THE SEA" local slogan cancel from January 1966.

This (philatelic) envelope from 1980 was compulsorily registered by the Post Office - it was crossed with blue lines with manuscript "Registered" and posted in a letter box.

Finally a registered envelope posted at Avenue, a Town Sub-Office in Minehead, in 1980.

Taunton town sub-offices - North Town, Priorswood, Shuttern

Here are three of the town sub-offices (TSOs) of Taunton, starting with a single ring cancel for North Town, Taunton from 1881.  The post office closed in 1922.

Next a certificate of posting handstamped in Priorswood, Taunton.

And finally a certificate of posting handstamped in Shuttern, Taunton.  The post office closed in 2008.

Bath Town Sub-Offices - Grosvenor, High St., Holloway

A few Bath TSO (Town Sub-Office) marks now, starting with a "GROSVENOR / BATH" single ring handstamp from 1869.  This handstamp was issued in January 1866, and a new smaller handstamp was issued in October 1869.

This registered cover to Bordeaux is back stamped "HIGH.ST / BATH" in January 1890.

Finally an envelope with a "HOLLOWAY / BATH" back stamp dated January 1878.
