Registered Mail - from Enmore, Evercreech, Glastonbury, Holcombe, and Ilminster

More registered mail from my pile, starting with Enmore in 1918, addressed to Bermuda "via New York".  The KGV registered envelope has a very distorted "ENMORE / BRIDGWATER" climax rubber cancel.

Back to the Rating Officer, Shepton Mallet with the next registered envelope from Evercreech in 1940.

Progressing alphabetically we get to Glastonbury in 1944 ...

... and then back to the Rating Officer, Shepton Mallet for Holcombe, Bath in 1940.

Finally here are a few registered items from Ilminster, starting with a registered envelope from 1966 addressed to the Chard Rural District Council.

For a fee the sender could get Advice Receipt, advice of delivery of a registered or recorded delivery as shown below from 1969 for an item addressed to Inwood Farm, Ashill, Ilminster and handled by the Ilminster post office.

The envelope below was sent registered air mail from Ilminster to Kenya in 1972.

UDCs #3 - Cross, East Harptree, Enmore, Huntspill

Continuing the UDC theme, this next sheet has two examples of the Cross UDC, from December 1827 and February 1838, spanning the first period of recorded usage.  From 1839 to 1840 Cross used a double arc dated handstamp, before reverting back to using its UDC from 1842 to 1850.

This next UDC is from East Harptree in June 1849, being another early serif-type UDC.

Enmore had two UDC handstamps, this example from October 1859 being currently the only recorded example of the second one which was issued in December 1855.

Below is the the latest known used example of the late format Huntspill UDC, from February 1859.

Climax Rubber Handstamps - Bridgwater sub-offices (2)

Cossington had three "COSSINGTON / BRIDGWATER" Type Ib handstamps issued, in 1890, prior to September 1906 and prior to July 1919 (the latter two not in the Proof Books).  The example below is from September 1917 and shows some distortion so may actually be another, as yet unrecorded, handstamp.

Dodington had three "DODINGTON / BRIDGWATER" Type Ib handstamps, issued in 1893 and prior to 1911 and to 1915.  This last handstamp may actually be two very similar ones as the handstamp is known distorted in 1921 while the example below from August 1923 is in good condition.

Enmore had three "ENMORE / BRIDGWATER" Type Ib handstamps, issued in 1890, prior to 1911 (not in the Proof Books) and in 1915.  The example below is from the second handstamp and extends the known usage from 1911 to July 1914.

Holford went through cancels at a rate of knots - it had seven "HOLFORD / BRIDGWATER" Type Ib handstamps, issued in 1891, prior to June 1905, prior to June 1912, prior to December 1913, prior to June 1914, prior to May 1920 and prior to September 1924.  It also had two different "HOLFORD / BRIDGWATER" Type 3 skeleton cancels, known used in September 1913 and May-June 1914.   The example below is from May 1912.

In addition here is a previously unknown "HOLFORD / BRIDGWATER / SOMERSET" Type 2 handstamp from July 1927.

Main period sans-serif 25mm UDCs under Bridgwater

Of the 32 offices under Bridgwater that had main period UDCs issued (there were more than 32 different ones as some places had more than one UDC issued, and many are also known used in multiple colours), I have the following examples.

Blackford's UDC was issued in April 1853.  The example below from 13th May 1853 is the first known example.

Broomfield's UDC was issued in April 1853 and is known used from 1855.  The example below comes from November 1859 and may be the latest known usage.

Cannington's UDC was issued on 22nd May 1846 and was known used in black from November 1846 to May 1850 and in blue from October 1853 to August 1855.  The blue example below is from August 1859 and may be the latest use known.

Enmore's UDC was issued on 22nd May 1846 and is known used from February 1849 to October 1859.  The example below is from January 1852.

Huntspill's UDC was issued on 3rd September 1849 and is known used in black from September 1849 to April 1858, with a single example known in brown from February 1856.  The blurred example below is from July 1855.

Putsom's UDC was issued on 22nd May 1846 and was known used from the end of June 1851 to the end of July 1851.  The example below from January 1853 extends this usage.

West Quantoxhead's UDC was issued on 29th September 1851 and its usage was unrecorded in the 1992 catalogue.  The example below is from October 1851.
