UDCs: Hambridge, Haselbury [Plucknett], Galhampton, Hatch [Beauchamp], Henlade

More UDCs, starting with a couple of examples of the Hambridge UDC, one in blue-grey and one in black (the only example in black currently recorded).

Here is an example of the Hazelbury UDC (now Haselbury Plucknett) used in 1856.  It also has a poor example of the Galhampton udc being used as a receiving mark - Galhampton is less than four miles from South Barrow where the card was addressed to.

The Hatch [Beauchamp] udc is known in yellow and red as well as in blue.  It is possible that the yellow and red examples were both originally red.

Finally here is an example of the Henlade udc from 1857.

Haselbury (Plucknett) boxed "No.4" in 1836

The entire below was from Haselbury to Shaftesbury, dated November 1836 inside, and has a boxed "No.4" receiving house handstamp.  Haselbury was in both the Crewkerne and Yeovil Penny Posts.  

Judging by the postal charge of 8d, which would have been 1d for the Penny Post and 7d in the General Post for 30-50 miles, the letter must have gone via Crewkerne.  Crewkerne to Shaftesbury is just over 30 miles (so 7d in the General Post) while Yeovil is only a bit over 30 miles (which would have been 6d for 20-30 miles).

Crewkerne and Cross

Here is a boxed "No.4" handstamp in the Crewkerne Penny Post from 1831.  The "No.4" handstamp was in use at Haselbury.

Next are a couple of items associated with the Cross Penny Post, starting with a boxed "No.3" handstamp from 1833.  Banwell was in the Wells Penny Post from 1823, and then in the Cross Penny Post which was established in 1827, and used the boxed "No.3" handstamp in both Penny Posts.

This next cover is from Wedmore, with a large unboxed "No.7" and a "CROSS" UDC from January 1845.

Random Somerset Places - Combe Hay, Haselbury Plucknett, Ilminster

The next few posts are fairly random places in Somerset that I have acquired examples of recently, starting with Combe Hay, Bath.  Unfortunately the stamp has been removed but there is a nice violet rubber handstamp for "COMBE HAY / BATH" dated 11th July 1907.

Next we'll jump to Haselbury Plucknett with a postcard with a "HASELBURY PLUCKNETT / CREWKERNE.SOM." double circle double-arc cancel from June 1948.

And then back in time to Ilminster with an Ilminster "401" numeric obliterator and a single ring "ILMINSTER" handstamp dated April 1860.

Some more recent acquisitions

Firstly a straight-line "CHARD" from 1768, with an early bishopmark.

Then a couple of items from Crewkerne, firstly a maltese cross from 1844 (just before the numeral obliterators came out in May 1844).

And an item from Haselbury, under Crewkerne, with a "Haselbury / Penny Post" handstamp that looks brown, but is probably just black.

Finally a faint "ILMINSTER" circular handstamp, with 10d postage erased and replaced by 1/8d, with a nice red Inspector's mark.
