A few more Somerset "C"s: Compton Martin, Cottles Oak and Curry Rivel

 Finishing off the Somerset "C"s that I have acquired in the last months, here are a couple of items from Compton Martin, starting with a postcard from 1903 that was posted on Christmas Day, and probably delivered then too.

The next envelope is from 2023 and appears to have the same Compton Martin cancel as the example above from 1903, 120 years earlier !

Cottles Oak is a suburb of Frome - here is a registered envelope from 1978 with Cottle Oak cancelations and a Frome 6 registration etiquette.

Finally here is an envelope, still with its original contents, sent to "Curry Rivel, Taunton" with a manuscript "Insufficient Address".

UDCs: Curry-Rival

Curry-Rival (or Curry-Rivell or Curry-Rivel) was issued with a 29mm seriffed UDC on 7th February 1844.  The UDC is known in black (from December 1848 to February 1857), blue (August 1851 to July 1859), and a single example in red (November 1845).  Here are a couple of examples from 1848 and 1857 (currently the earliest and latest recorded examples in black).

Undated Circular Handstamps - Cannington, Curry-Rival, Kingston [St. Mary]

Carrying on with the UDCs, here is a late usage of the UDC handstamp for Cannington.

This is an example of the serif  "CURRY-RIVAL" UDC in blue, which is not recorded in the British County Catalogue.  It is also charged 2d postage due as it was not prepaid.

And finally here is what is currently the earliest known example of the UDC from Kingston [St. Mary].

UDC handstamps - Cossington, Curry-Rival, Temple Combe

Cossington had two undated circular handstamps issued - the example below, used on 2nd November 1850, is of the first handstamp which was issued on the 22nd May 1846 (the second was issued in May 1852).

Another example of the Curry-Rival serif handstamp, this time in black from January 1849 (I've already shown an example in blue from 1852 here).

An example of the late type, single-arc undated circular handstamp for Temple-Combe from 5th April 1858 (the handstamp is known used between 1st and 5th April 1858).

Yet more early serif UDCs - Upper Clevedon, Pensford, Pilton, Curry-Rival, ...

Upper Clevedon's UDC was registered on 9th May 1843 and is known used from June 1843 to September 1850 in black, with a single example in yellow known from 1851.  The example below in black is relatively late usage from April 1850.

Pensford's UDC was not registered in the Steel Impression Book, but is known used from July 1843 to August 1850.  The two examples below are from January 1844 and July 1850.

Pilton's UDC was registered in the SIB on 3rd January 1844 and is known used from 1845 to August 1855.  the example below is from January 1852.

Curry-Rival's UDC was registered on 7th February 1844 and is known used in black from 1848 to February 1857 and in blue from August 1851 to January 1858.  The example in blue below is from June 1852.
