Some Somerset "C"s: Cannington, Cheddar, Chilcompton, Chilton Polden, Churchill, Churchinford

As a bit of change, here are some Somerset postmarks from places that begin with "C", starting with a couple of examples of the Cannington undated circular handstamp (UDC), firstly in black in 1848 ...

... then in brown in 1851.

The postcard below from Cheddar to Cardiff in September 1948 was underfranked at 1d.  The Postcard Rate had been 2d since 1st May 1940.

A registered envelope sent in July 1940 gives an example of the Chilcompton cancel and registration etiquette.

The early Climax rubber cancels were in violet because the standard black ink caused the handstamps to deteriorate.  Here is a nice clear example of the Chilton Polden cancel from 1904 on a parcel post label.

Churchill's cancel is used here on a first day cover in April 1980.

And finally here is another registered envelope, this time giving examples of the Churchinford cancel and registration etiquette in April 1939.

Latest UDC in Somerset ? ... at Churchill in 1861

Is this the latest UDC usage in Somerset – a “CHURCHILL” udc in blue used on 17^th June 1861 ?

The stamping of letters at all offices using undated handstamps should have ceased after the issue of an Instruction To Postmasters dated 17^th March 1860, so this should be treated as abnormal usage.

Other abnormal-use examples of the “CHURCHILL” udc are known on 14^th June 1861 and on 19^th December 1860 (seen on eBay).

UDCs #2 - Burnham, Cheddar, Churchill (& Langford & Street), Upper Clevedon

Continuing with UDCs, here is an example of the "BURNHAM-SOMST" UDC from November 1844.

This next sheet has three examples of Cheddar UDCs, from August & October 1848 and March 1849. The earliest Cheddar UDC was issued in December 1847, with later ones issued in March and April 1851.

This cover from March 1852 has three UDCs for the price of one, with UDCs from Churchill in blue, Langford in black and Street also in black, being the earliest recorded blue Churchill UDC and black Langford UDC.

This entire has a nice example of the Upper Clevedon UDC from the middle of June 1843 - not quite the earliest known which is from 1st June.

More main period sans-serif 25mm UDCs under Bristol

A few more main period UDCs from offices under Bristol:

Churchill's UDC was issued on 14th May 1845, and is known used in black (June 1845 to January 1850) and in blue from March 1852 to July 1859.  The example below is in blue from March 1859.

Langford's main period UDC was issued on 2nd December 1851 and is known used from March 1852 to February 1857.  The example below is from July 1855.

West Town had the first main period UDC, issued on 10th July 1844.  It is known used in black from December 1844 to September 1848 and also in blue between December 1853 and August 1857.  The example in black below is from April 1846.
