A few Somerset "H"s - Hinton St George, Hinton St Mary, Huntspill

The entire below was sent from Hinton St George in June 1829 in the Ilminster Fifth Clause Post, with the boxed "No.3" handstamp of Hinton St George.

In more modern times, here are a couple of items from Hinton St George, the top in 1958 and the lower one from 1975, both with HINTON ST.GEORGE / SOMERSET" double circle double line-arc cancels.

Hinton St Mary is about 25 miles east of Hinton St George and is in Dorset.  The Parcel Post Label below was used in 1896.

Another "H", the envelope below has a "HUNTSPILL" double arc undated handstamp and was used below in July 1855.

UDCs: Hinton St George in Black, Brown/Black and Blue

 Hinton St George was issued with a 29mm serif undated double-arc handstamp on 21st November 1843 under Crewkerne.  The UDC is known used in brown/black and in blue.  The first example below is currently the earliest known usage of the UDC.

This next example, from September 1851 appears brown rather than black.

The next two sheets show the UDC in blue, from January 1858 and March 1858 (currently the earliest and latest reported examples).

Ilminster Fifth Clause Post

Here is a nice example of the framed Ilminster Fifth Clause Post handstamp with the boxed "No.3" of Hinton St George.  Hinton St George was also in the Crewkerne Fifth Clause Post and used the boxed "No.3" in both posts.

Even more early serif UDCs - Farrington Gurney, Hinton St. George and Long Ashton

Farrington Gurney's UDC was issued on 17th August 1841 through the Bristol office.  The handstamp is known used in black between July 1842 and March 1855, with a single example known in brown in November 1856.  The example below is from April 1847.

Long Ashton's UDC was issued in October 1843, again through the Bristol office, and is known used in black between December 1844 and November 1857, as well as in blue (July - November 1857) and brown (December 1856). The example below on a front is undated.

Hinton St. George's UDC was issued on 21st November 1843 and is known used between October 1844 and September 1851.  The example below is from February 1845.
