GWR Miscellany

Here is a miscellany of GWR items - a GWR receipt postcard used in 1899, a GWR luggage tag used in 1937, and a GWR seat reservation card (undated).

G.W.R. Memorandum, 1932

This GWR memo dated 23rd December 1932 is of some postal history interest as it details changes to postal addresses in Somerset and Devon (for example Allerford moves from being under Taunton to being under Minehead).  Here is the memorandum, with a red "STATION MASTER'S OFFICE / TAUNTON" handstamp.

Here are a few GWR memos received at Taunton Railway Station with "TAUNTON STATION . GREAT WESTERN RLY" single ring receiving handstamps.

Miscellany - GWR perfin, WWI "More Baccy", Yeovil invoice

A trio of random miscellany, starting with a "GWR" perfin, date unknown, from Athelney railway station.

Next is a  WWI postcard from the front saying thank-you for the gift parcel of "smokes" in 1917.

And finally an invoice from The Western Gazette, Yeovil in 1879.

Great Western Railway Bath

Here are two items of mail that were conveyed by the Great Western Railway before going in the General Post.  As such they paid an additional fee for conveyance by the railway of double the general post rate, hence the 2d charge for the railway with the 1d charge for the normal post.

This first item is from 1894, and has post office cancels (3-bar vertical oval duplex cancels) on both the railway and the normal postage stamp.

The scond item is from 1908, and has G.W.R. cancels on both the stamps.

Bath and the G.W.R.

Here are a couple of Great Western Railway items associated with Bath, starting with an envelope from April 1894 with a GWR 2d stamp - there was an additional fee for the conveyance of letters by railway of double the normal postage charge.  Both the GWR stamp and the normal stamp are cancelled by "BATH / 53" 3-bar vertical oval duplex cancels.

This second item from February 1908 also has a 2d GWR stamp, but in this case both stamps  are cancelled by double framed "G.W.R / BATH" rectangular cancels.

Taunton Miscellany

Here are three varied items from Taunton, starting with a "TAUNTON / 2" skeleton from 1846.

The next item is from the Great Western Railway and is an instruction on how to deal with refunds for overstamped or cancelled telegrams.

Finally, here is an item from WWII that was initially sent from Bath to Taunton, then went around looking for the addressee, and finally was returned to the sender.
