Climax Rubber cancels and skeletons including a Devon rubber cancel

Here are some more Climax rubber cancels, starting with one from Odcombe in May 1916.

The next couple are skeletons starting with one from Wadeford in August 1912 ...

... and from Yarlington in May 1906.

Finally here is a Climax rubber cancel from Burlescombe in Devon in December 1924 - I include this as part of Somerset because Burlescombe came under Wellington, which is indicated in the cancel.

Happy New Year !!

Some Climax rubber cancels from post offices under Ilminster

A few more sheets of Climax rubber cancels, this time from some of the post offices under Ilminster.  The first sheet has examples of two of the three cancels issued to Ashill.

Next come a couple of sheets of cancels from Barrington.  Barrington has four types of cancel, the first of which is recorded as a proof but not yet recorded in use.

Horton had seven Climax rubber cancels (again, the first was recorded as a proof but hasn't been recorded in use).  The sheet below has examples of the last recorded in use, from 1921.

Ilton has three cancels recorded (again the first was proofed but not yet recorded in use).  Below is an example of the second cancel used, from 1912 - there are two examples below but the second is not dateable - and examples of the third type.

Finally here is an example of the second cancel for Stocklinch, unfortunately not completely dateable as the final digit of the year is not completely readable (0 or maybe 6 perhaps).

Some more Climax Rubber cancels from post offices under Taunton

I originally made a post in 2014 that described the background to Climax Rubber cancels - see here.  The time has come to post up a few more, starting with some under Taunton.  In the intervening years the number of such cancels recorded used in Somerset has increased from 636 to 692 (nearly all new types rather than new places).

To date five different Climax Rubber cancels are known for Babcary.  Most were under Taunton, with one under Somerton known from 1905 to 1907.  The one below from August 1911, known in 1911-1912, can be distinguished from the one known later by the length of "TAUNTON".

Culmhead currently has three different cancels known, the one below is known 1914-1915 and is the latest known Climax cancel.

Only one Climax rubber cancel is known for Curland, and it is only known used in 1916.  The cancel was issued in 1896.

Six different Climax rubber cancels are known for Luxborough, four under Taunton and two under Washford.  Below are examples of the last two types, from 1922 and 1927.

And finally Shoreditch which has two types of Climax rubber cancel recorded - below are examples of both types, which can be distinguished by the length of "TAUNTON" in the cancels.

Highbridge (1989), Curland (1991), Chard (1997), Staplegrove (2002, 2005) and Shepton Beauchamp (2008)

A miscellany of items to clear the decks for Christmas, starting with a large registered envelope from  Highbridge in April 1989.

The receipt below are certificates of posting for registered letters from Curland in October 1991.

The unfranked letter below, to Chard, was charged a handling fee on top of the deficient fee in June 1997 - in this case it made no difference to the amount to pay.

As I've said below, it is quite difficult to get cancels from town sub-offices:  here are a couple from Staplegrove, Taunton in 2002 and 2005.

And finally another Certificate of Posting, this one from Shepton Beauchamp in May 2008.

A couple of parcel related items for Christmas

Here are a couple of parcel post items, beginning with a parcel post facsimile label for Westfield, Radstock (possibly a favour cancel) dated June 1975.

And then a real parcel item from Horton in September 1986, paying for a 1-2 kg parcel.

Combe St Nicholas (1924), Blagdon Hill (1945) and Minehead (1948)

Here are a trio of ordinary postal items, starting with a postcard from Combe St Nicholas to Ilminster in April 1924.

Next is a rainfall report postcard from Blagdon Hill (for Westcombe, Culmhead) to Bridgwater in September 1945 - "Very catchy weather for Harvesting" with lots of rain.

The final item is a First Day Cover sent registered within Minehead in July 1948.

Nether Stowey (1905), Stoke St Gregory (1909), Wincanton (1913) and Wootton Courtenay (1913)

I'm working through some recent acquisitions, so in date order here's a cover from Nether Stowey to Bishop's Hull in September 1905, redirected to Cardiff.

This postcard from Stoke St Gregory to North Curry in December 1909 is answering a query about local thatchers.

Here is a registered envelope from Wincanton to New Jersey in August 1913, going via Bath railway station to Southampton before being received in New York.

Finally here is a 1913 Christmas postcard going from Wootton Courtenay to Lydeard St Lawrence.  Postmarked on Christmas Eve, it might have been delivered the same day.

South Petherton (1925)

This printed form sent from South Petherton in January 1925 is a request for Vicarial Tithes.  Interestingly the two halfpenny stamps have different South Petherton cancels, one a single ring and the other a double ring.

Watchet (1843), Shepton Mallet (1888) and Frome (1897)

This clear example of the Watchet Penny Post handstamp was used in January 1843, three years after the end of the local penny posts.  It also has a Taunton Penny Post dated handstamp.

This Shepton Mallet single ring cancel was used in January 1888, thirteen years after the cancel was issued.

These Frome items were sent in September 1897.  The first is marked as Book Post but could have been overfranked at 1d.

The second item from Frome, sent six days later was not franked so incurred 2d postage due.

Stogumber UDC, 1848

Here is an example of the Stogumber UDC from November 1848 on the receipt for a Registered Letter.  It is not clear exactly what colour the UDC is, red or yellow, given the fading of ink over time.

Some mail to / from abroad

Here are a number of covers to or from abroad, starting with one going by airmail from North Curry to Australia in 1946.  Apart from the high franking value of 1/3 there is nothing odd about the cover - though as it was from before the introduction of a general scheme for airmails in January 1947 it's difficult to know what the correct postal rate would have been.

This next cover is from Antigua to Wells in 1841.  The letter was charged 1/-.  The contents relate to shipments of sugar.

And finally the letter below was sent to Cyprus Poste Restante from Weston-super-Mare in August 1960 but was not claimed so was returned and was charged based on it being underfranked at 6d rather than 9d.

More Taunton

Here are a few more Taunton covers.  The one below is from North Curry for Canada but has been underpaid at 3d, so received a large "1d" charge mark (probably at Taunton) and then a large "2" (cents) charge mark, probably at Toronto.

Next is printed matter from Taunton to Stogumber in September 1881 with an undated Taunton "776" 3-bar vertical oval cancel.  It has the imprint of Edwin Wotton & Co of Taunton.

The contents are about the bankruptcy of William and Albert Feathgerstone.

The next item is not postal, being a receipted invoice dated Lady Day (25th March) 1929 from Hanwkes & Sons Ltd.  The receipt shows an early tractor pulling some agricultural machinery.

The next item, from February 1993 was not to be redirected, as it was about a redirection request.

And finally here is a Taunton SID (Self-Inking Datestamp) on another redirection form, dated March 1999 - and bearing an impressive £26 of stamps.

Taunton Too Late, 1829

The entire below has a really crisp example of the Taunton "TOO LATE" cachet.  It was used in September 1829 and must have been soon after the introduction of the handstamp which is known used from 1829 to 1843.

The entire is from Taunton to Dublin with a postal charge of 1/3d.  This would have been 1/- for the General Post from Taunton to Holyhead via Shrewsbury, plus 1d for the Menai Bridge, plus 2d for the Holyhead-Dublin packet.

Wellington and Wells - Money Order Savings Bank cancels

Here are two examples of Money Order & Savings Bank cancels, from Wellington and from Wells.  The first, from Wellington is a postcard from November 1912.

The second, a registered and fragile envelope is from Wells in June 1901.  The blue diagonal lines mean 'Fragile' and that the letter should not be transferred by railway T.P.O. equipment.

Both Wellington and Wells had to have the county name (or an abbreviation) in their cancels, to distinguish from Wellington (Shropshire) and Wells (Norfolk).

Yeovil, and Yeovilton

A series of covers from Yeovil starting with a 4-bar vertical oval (4VOD) cancel from 1870.  It's sometimes difficult to date these, but in the example below there is a manuscript date on the reverse of 9th December 1870.

The large OHMS envelope below was sent in August 1900 and has oval "REGISTERED / YEOVIL" cancels.

A postcard to Trowbrige om June 1927 with a "YEOVIL.SOM" Krag cancel - and a sticker for Yeovil Carnival.

More modern now, some meter mail from Yeovil with a triangular Royal Mail Quality Control Yeovil cachet saying that the meter mark has the wrong date - firms had to remember to update the date manually at the start of a new day.

And finally a certificate of posting with a Yeovilton Royal Navy Station postmark from April 1995, and a Savings Certificate form with a preprinted address for the post office.
